General

Variable desktops
- Number of desktops
  Sets the number of virtual desktops.
- Initial desktop
  Sets which virtual desktop is active when Dexpot starts. Dexpot automatically switches to the initial desktop after start-up. You can either set a fixed initial desktop or have Dexpot switch to the desktop that was active when Dexpot was last quit.
International
- Choose language
  Sets the user interface language of Dexpot. The English and German language files are maintained by the Dexpot team and are always up to date. Other translations are contributed by volunteers and may be incomplete. Entries missing from a language file are shown in English.

- About
  Displays some details about the selected language file.
Start
- Start with Windows
  Automatically launch Dexpot every time Windows is started (every time you log in, respectively).
- Check for updates
  Contact the Dexpot update server on every start to check for the availability of a new version.

- Hide splash screen
  Do not show the blue Dexpot splash screen when Dexpot is started.
- Run as administrator
  On Windows Vista and 7: Windows of applications running with administrator privileges will always be visible on every desktop unless Dexpot itself is running with administrator privileges also. Enabling this option is not recommended from a security standpoint - only use it when you really have to. When UAC (User Account Control) is enabled, you will be prompted by Windows to confirm the start of Dexpot.
- Show list of profiles on startup
  Display a profile selection screen when Dexpot is started. The screen contains a list of all your Dexpot profiles and lets you choose a profile to load. You can also continue without loading a profile, using the settings that were active the last time Dexpot was running instead.
- Automatically load last configuration after __ seconds
  When using the profile selection screen, automatically continue without loading a profile after the specified amount of time.
- Process priority
  Sets the priority of the dexpot.exe process. Increasing the priority may reduce the time required for desktop switching but can also interfere with other applications, e.g. audio players, on single core machines.
Exit
- Exit without confirmation window
  Immediately shut down Dexpot when selecting the Exit command from the main menu. Do not show the confirmation window asking what desktop to switch to and what to do with windows not on that desktop. Dexpot will shut down on the currently active desktop and treat windows not present on the current desktop according to the option that was chosen the last time the exit confirmation window was used. This option is enabled by default.
- Save profile on exit
  Save all settings (including desktop configuration, rules, etc.) to the currently loaded profile when shutting down Dexpot.
Profiles
- Choose profile
  This list shows all your custom Dexpot profiles, plus the default profile. A profile is a file storing all Dexpot settings, including the settings of all active plugins. Using profiles, you can quickly restore different Dexpot configurations, e.g. when using a laptop computer both at home and at work. Profiles can also be used to transfer settings between different Dexpot installations.
  [FAQ] Where are the profiles stored (how to backup)?
- Load
  Loads the selected profile. After clicking this button, you can choose which parts of the profile to load. You can either load the entire profile or any combination of single sections like hotkeys, desktop icons, etc. By loading the default profile, you can restore any setting to its default value.
- Save
  Save the current configuration to the selected profile, overwriting the original profile file. The default profile cannot be replaced.
- Save as...
  Save the current configuration as a new profile. After clicking the button, Dexpot will ask for the name of the new profile.
- Delete
  Delete the currently selected profile. The default profile cannot be deleted.

Appearance

Tray icon
You can choose among a number of different styles for the Dexpot tray icon. This is the Dexpot indicator icon in the taskbar notification area next to the system clock, usually in the lower right corner of the screen.
[FAQ] How to customize Dexpot's tray icons
- Default
  The default option is to show the familiar Dexpot icon, a monitor showing a blue gradient screen. Right-clicking the icon opens the Dexpot main menu, middle-clicking opens the extended main menu. Actions for double clicking and Ctrl-clicking can be chosen below.
- Previous / next desktop
  In this mode, two arrow shaped icons are shown. Clicking the icons switches to the previous or next virtual desktop, respectively.
- One icon per desktop
  In this mode, one icon displaying the desktop number is shown for every desktop. The icon belonging to the currently active desktop is highlighted. Clicking an icon switches to the corresponding virtual desktop. Note that you might have to manually bring the icons into the correct order on Windows 7.

- Current desktop
  In this mode, a single icon displaying the number of the currently active desktop is shown. The icon behaves like the default icon otherwise.
- No icon
  This option removes all Dexpot indicator icons from the system tray. When enabling this option, first make sure you have another way of reaching the Dexpot settings, e.g. via a hotkey or the Dexpot start menu entries.
- Action on Ctrl + single-click
  Sets the action to be performed when clicking the Dexpot tray icon with the left mouse button while holding down the Control key.
- Action on double-click
  Sets the action to be performed when double clicking the Dexpot tray icon with the left mouse button.
System menus
- Add Dexpot entries to the system menus of all windows
  The system menu of a window is the contextual menu that pops up when right-clicking the window's title bar. Among others, it contains commands for maximizing, minimizing, and closing the window. By enabling this option, a Dexpot submenu is added to the system menu of every window. The Dexpot entries allow you to e.g. move a window to a different desktop using its system menu.
  When a new window is opened, it may sometimes take a few seconds before the Dexpot submenu appears. It can also happen that instead of a submenu a single Dexpot entry is shown. Clicking this entry will then popup a separate menu with the usual Dexpot commands.
Windows minimized to system tray
Dexpot allows you to minimize arbitrary windows to the system tray, i.e. hide their taskbar button and replace it by an icon in the tray. To minimize a window, you can for instance use the corresponding command in its system menu, added by the option above. To restore the window, click its tray icon with the left mouse button. Right-clicking the icon opens a menu with further commands.
- Restore with double-click
  Require double clicking icons to restore them from the system tray.
- Use container for windows minimized to system tray
  Use a single icon to represent all windows minimized to the tray by Dexpot. When this option is enabled, a single Dexpot container icon is added to the system tray, which displays a menu listing all windows minimized to the tray when clicked on. Use this option to avoid cluttering up the system tray with too many icons when extensively employing the minimize to tray feature.
Full-screen applications
Dexpot automatically hides its components e.g. Desktop Manager or Desktop Preview when a full-screen application becomes active.
- Hide Dexpot components when a full-screen application is active
  Enable this option if you find hiding Dexpot components doesn't fit your needs, especially when working with remote desktop connections.

Components: Desktop Manager
The settings in this section apply to the "Desktop Manager", a small Dexpot toolbar you can use to switch desktops and distribute windows and icons. To activate the Desktop Manager, select the entry of the same name from the Dexpot main menu. Most of the options are also available directly through a contextual menu in the manager which can be accessed by right-clicking the space between the manager's icons representing the virtual desktops. The manager can be moved across the screen by clicking its background and dragging with the mouse. The currently active desktop is indicated by a square border around the corresponding icon.

Transparency
Controls the manager's degree of transparency. Move the slider to the left to make the manager more see-through.
Options
- Start with Dexpot
  Automatically bring up the Desktop Manager when Dexpot is started.
- Show icons of active windows
  Every virtual desktop is represented by an icon in the manager. When this option is enabled, the icon used to represent a desktop is the icon of the window active on that desktop. If no application window is focused or if the active window has no icon, a default icon may be shown.
  When the option is disabled, static icons are used, which can be customized in "Configure Desktops".
- Switch with mouse wheel
  Enable mouse wheel desktop switching. Click the manager one with the left mouse button, then spin the mouse wheel up to switch to the previous desktop, or down for the next desktop.
- Lock position
  Prevents the manager from being repositioned using the mouse.
- Stick to edge of screen
  Snap the manager to the edge of the screen when moving it close to the edge.
- Small icons
  Reduce the size of the icons and the manager as a whole to make it less obtrusive.
Additional Button
- Show additional button
  Enables the additional button in the Desktop Manager.
- Icon
  Sets the icon to be used for the additional button.
- Action on single click
  Sets the action to be performed when clicking the the additional button once with the left mouse button.
- Action on double-click
  Sets the action to be performed when clicking the the additional button twice with the left mouse button.
- Action on middle-click
  Sets the action to be performed when clicking the the additional button once with the middle mouse button.
Background
- Default
  Show the manager with the default blue gradient background.
- Monochrome
  Use a solid color as the manager's background. Click the color box or the button next to it in order to change the background color.
- Transparent
  Makes the manager's background completely invisible; only the icons and the border indicating the current desktop remain. Clicks in the background area will go through to the window below. To move the manager and access the background menu a tiny gray square is shown as a handle in the upper left corner of the manager.
Orientation
- Horizontal
  The manager is shown as a row with the icons placed left to right.
- Vertical
  The manager is shown as a column with the icons placed top to bottom.
Define hotkey
Switches to the hotkey section of the settings to let you change the hotkey for activating the manager.

Components: Desktop Preview
The settings in this section apply to the "Desktop Preview", a component that provides quick access to the individual windows on all desktops. Clicking a window representation in the preview initiates a switch to the window's desktop and activates it. Right-clicking a window representation brings up a menu with the usual Dexpot commands for that window. Windows can be moved and copied to other desktops by dragging their representation in the preview. The Desktop Preview is resizable and can be freely positioned on the screen in the same way as the Desktop Manager. Many of the options described in the following can also be changed from inside the preview via a menu, which can be opened by right-clicking on an empty spot of the preview that is not covered by the representation of a window.

Transparency
Sets the Desktop Preview's transparency, from fully opaque to invisible. Move the slider to the left to make the preview more transparent.
Options
- Start with Dexpot
  Automatically open the Desktop Preview on Dexpot start-up.
- Hide title bar
  Display the preview window without a title bar. The preview can still be moved clicking on an empty spot of the preview and then dragging it with the mouse.
Appearance
The Desktop Preview supports two distinct visual representations of windows.
- Window sketches
  In this mode, the previews shows a scaled down version of the actual window layout. Each window is represented by a box containing the window's title and its icon.
- Icons
  In icon mode, the preview represents the windows on a particular desktop as a list of the windows' icons. The icons are shown in the order in which the windows are stacked on top of each other, beginning with the topmost one.
Behavior
- Auto-hide
  Automatically move the Desktop Preview off the screen when it's not being used. The preview will hide at the nearest screen edge. A small portion of the preview remains visible. Move the mouse cursor over it to slide the window back into view.
- Keep aspect ratio
  When this option is active, the preview can only be resized in such a way that the ratio of width to height remains constant, i.e. you can only resize it along the window diagonals.
- Force correct aspect ratio
  When this option is enabled, the aspect ratio of the individual desktops in the preview will be automatically adjusted to match that of your physical screen resolution.
Colors
The colors used in the Desktop Preview can be customized. Click the color box next to a label to change the corresponding color.
- Active desktop
  Sets the color for the background of the currently active desktop and the inside of window sketches on the active desktop.
- Inactive desktop
  Sets the color for the background of all desktops not currently active and the inside of window sketches on those desktops.
- Window border
  Sets the color for the border and title bars of window sketches.
- Window title
  Sets the font color for the title of window sketches.

Components: DexTab
Since the Windows Alt+Tab task switcher only shows windows on the current desktop, Dexpot offers a virtual desktop aware replacement, called "DexTab". The feature comes in two variations, the "DexTab Task switcher" and the "DexTab Desktop switcher". The DexTab Task switcher works just like Alt+Tab, but also includes windows on other desktops. Its default hotkey is Win+Q. The desktop switcher is primarily used to do just that, switch desktops, rather then individual tasks. It shows a screenshot of each virtual desktop and uses Win+W as the default hotkey.

Options
The options in this section determine which windows are shown in the task switcher and in what order. They also affect the list of icons in the top right of the desktop switcher representing the windows on the selected desktop.
- Sort windows by title
  Sorts windows alphabetically by title. When this option is disabled, windows are shown in the order in which they are placed on top of each other on the desktop.
- Only show windows which are listed in the taskbar
  Ignores any window that does not have its own button in the taskbar. When this option is enabled, the set of windows shown by DexTab usually coincides with that shown in the Windows task switcher (only considering the currently active desktop).
DexTab Task switcher
- Show windows minimized to system tray
  Includes windows minimized to the system tray by Dexpot in the DexTab Task switcher. The windows are put in an additional section after the last desktop.
- Show empty desktops
  Set to display desktops with no window.
Initial selection task switcher
- Active window
  Initially selects the currently active window in the task switcher. Pressing the hotkey and immediately releasing it again will therefore not switch tasks.
- Last active window
  Initially selects the window that was active before the currently active one became activated. Repeatedly pressing and releasing the hotkey will switch back and forth between two windows.
Initial selection desktop switcher
- Active desktop
  Initially selects the currently active desktop in the desktop switcher.
- Last active desktop
  Initially selects the desktop that was left during the last desktop switch.
Colors
On Windows Vista and Windows 7 with the Aero Glass visual theme enabled, the task and desktop switchers are rendered as sheets of glass and the text and background color options have no effect. On Windows XP or with Aero Glass disabled, DexTab appears as a regular window and the text and background colors are customizable, but the selection color has no effect.
- Text
  Sets the text color used in the task and desktop switchers.
- Background
  Sets the background color of the task and desktop switcher windows.
- Selection
  Sets the color used to highlight the selected item in the task and desktop switchers. Note that due to the glass effect, the actual color may appear a lot lighter than the color selected here, depending on the content of the window below DexTab.
- System colors
  Pressing this button reverts all colors back to default system colors.
Define hotkey
- DexTab Task switcher
  Switches to the hotkey section of the settings to let you change the hotkey for activating the DexTab Task switcher.
- DexTab Desktop switcher
  Switches to the hotkey section of the settings to let you change the hotkey for activating the DexTab Desktop switcher.

Components: Full-screen
This tab sums up options for both Full-screen preview and Window catalog as they're optimized and now part of DexControl: DexControl feature guide

DexControl
- Use interactive Full-screen preview and Window catalog
  Enables the new and enhanced versions of Full-screen preview and Window catalog. Disabling the option will make Dexpot fall back to the old version.
- Animation speed: __ %
  Sets the speed of effects like zooming. Default is 100%. The higher, the speedier.
- Show desktop names
  Overlay each desktop with the desktop name set in "Configure Desktops".
- Show window labels in tile view
  DexControl allows you to show your windows as tiles. In addition, it displays the windows' titles.
- Show on monitors excluded from switching
  By default, DexControl also shows up on monitors excluded from switching. See section "Switching Desktops" for more info on monitor exclusion.
- Combine same-sized monitors
  Displays the monitors' contents beside each other, rather than listing your desktops separately.
- Start Full-screen preview in tile view
  Shows all windows of all desktops as tiles.
- Start Full-screen preview with current desktop zoomed
  Zooms the current desktop.
- Middle mouse button closes windows in tile view
  Quickly close windows with the middle mouse button.
- Keep taskbar visible
  Keep track of your taskbar activities and switch window focus.
Define hotkey
- Full-screen preview
  Switches to the hotkey section of the settings to let you change the hotkey for activating the Full-screen preview.
- Window catalog
  Switches to the hotkey section of the settings to let you change the hotkey for activating the Window catalog.

Controls: Hotkeys
This section of the settings contains a list of all available hotkeys, including both Dexpot core features and hotkeys offered by the Dexpot plugins currently running. The hotkeys are organized into several categories. Click the small plus signs or double-click the category headings to expand them. Select a hotkey to see the key combination assigned to it.

Key combination
Shows the key combination assigned to the selected hotkey. The checkboxes indicate the combination of modifier keys (Alt, Shift, Ctrl, and Win) that has to be pressed together with the key named in the text field below, in order to trigger the hotkey. Check the modifier checkboxes to set up the desired modifier combination for the selected hotkey.
Define
Changes the key combination assigned to the selected hotkey. After clicking the button, press a key of your choice. You can also press any of the Alt, Shift, and Ctrl keys first to (un)check the checkbox of the corresponding modifier key. Instead of pressing the "Define" button, you can also click inside the key text field. When you create a key combination that is already in use by another application or assigned to a different Dexpot hotkey, a warning icon will appear next to the text field.
Delete
Deletes the key combination assigned to the selected hotkey.
Continue series
This button is visible when a hotkey from one of the "Switch desktop", "Move window", or "Copy window" sequences is selected. When pressed, Dexpot will try to find a meaningful continuation of the series, based on the value of the hotkey selected. For example, when you assign Alt+1 as the hotkey to switch to desktop 1 and then click "Continue series", Dexpot will automatically register Alt+2, Alt+3, etc. for switching to the respective desktop.
Explanation
Displays a short explanation when moving the mouse cursor over a hotkey whose meaning may not be immediately obvious.
Allow hotkeys without modifiers
Sometimes it makes sense to have single key shortcus. Beware that allowing hotkeys without modifiers might cause confusion.
Clear all
Deletes all hotkeys currently registered by Dexpot.

Controls: Mouse switch
The "mouse switch" features allows you to switch desktop by moving the mouse cursor to the edge of the screen. Click "Activate mouse switch" to enable the following options.

Trigger
Choose a combination of modifier keys and mouse buttons that has to be pressed (in addition to the other conditions below) in order to trigger a mouse switch.
Adjustment
- Delay
  Sets the amount of time in milliseconds which the cursor is required to stay on the screen edge to initiate the switch. The slider ranges from 0 (instantaneous switching) on the far left to 5 seconds on the right.
- Distance
  Determines how far away from the absolute screen edge the cursor is allowed to be to count for the mouse switch feature. Possible values range from 0 to 20 pixels.
- Sensitivity
  Controls the tolerance for movement within the delay period. When the slider is the set all the way to the left, the mouse cursor has to remain still for the full period. The further it is moved to right, the more the cursor can move while still triggering the switch.
Options
- Set mouse cursor to opposing edge of screen
  Automatically moves the cursor to the opposite screen edge after performing a mouse switch.
- Move mouse cursor out of border area after switch
  Automatically moves the cursor to a safe distance away from the edge after a mouse switch, so as to not trigger another switch by accident.
Edges
Sets on which screen edges mouse switching is enabled. The left and top edges will switch to the previous desktop, the right and bottom edges are used for switching to the next desktop.
Corners
Enables mouse switching restricted to the screen corners. The left corners will switch to the previous desktop and the right corners will switch to the next desktop. Note that edges take precedence over corners: when mouse switching is enabled on an edge, the two corners on that edge can't be selected.

Controls: Title bars
With title bar controls you can easily manipulate windows without the need to go through "Desktop Windows" or any other Dexpot component. You can e.g. set up that right-clicking a window's "Minimize" button minimizes it to the system tray.

Area
Select one of the four available title bar areas to see the actions configured for this area in the list below. You can then add new actions or remove existing ones.
Mouse button
Choose the mouse button to use for a new title bar action.
Modifier
Choose any combination of modifier keys that have to be pressed in addition to the specified mouse button in order to trigger the action.
Target
Sets what windows to apply the action to.
- Active window
  Applies the action to the window whose title bar you clicked.
- Active application
  Applies the action to all windows belonging to the same application as the window whose title bar you clicked.
- All windows
  Applies the action to all visible windows.
Action
Sets the action to be performed by a new title bar action.
Add
Adds a new title bar action to the selected area with the mouse button, modifier, target, and action given above.
Remove
Removes the title bar action selected from the list above.

Desktop icons

        If not ticked, Dexpot will create a new folder with name "Desktop 1" instead of using your original Windows desktop folder.
  - Use a shared common folder for all desktops
    There's just one physical folder for all desktops. Dexpot moves icons from other desktops or deleted desktop icons off-screen.

    - Options
      - Align to grid
        Aligns the icons on all desktops to a grid roughly equivalent to that of the Windows feature of the same name. The icons can still be moved freely. The actual alignment is done on every desktop switch. The size of the icon grid can be changed in the Windows control panel.
      - Auto Arrange
        Forces all icons to line up on the left side of their desktop, using the same grid as the previous option.
Background
- Customize desktop background
  Have a different wallpaper and background color on each desktop. To set up which wallpapers to use, open "Configure Desktops" from the Dexpot main menu.
- Restore desktop background on exit
  Restore the wallpaper that was set before Dexpot started.
- Apply manual changes to Dexpot configuration
  When this option is enabled, changes to the desktop background made by other applications or through the Windows control panel are automatically applied to the Dexpot configuration for the currently active desktop. When the option is disabled, such changes are ignored the background set in "Configure Desktops" is restored on the next switch to that particular desktop.
Screen resolution
- Customize screen resolution
  Have a different screen resolution on each desktop. Use "Configure Desktops" to select a resolution for each desktop.
- Apply manual changes to Dexpot configuration
  Automatically apply changes to the screen resolution made outside of "Configure Desktops" to the Dexpot configuration.
Screensaver
- Customize screensaver
  Have a different screensaver on each desktop. Use "Configure Desktops" to change screensavers. Note that an individual screensaver's options will be the same across all desktops that use that screensaver.
- Apply manual changes to Dexpot configuration
  Automatically apply changes to the screensaver settings made outside of "Configure Desktops" to the Dexpot configuration.
Taskbar
- Keep all taskbar buttons visible
  This option keeps the taskbar buttons of all windows visible on all desktops. Clicking a button makes Dexpot switch to the desktop of the respective window.

Switching Desktops: Desktop names
Dexpot offers an overlay containing the name of the currently active desktop to be shown either constantly or for a short period of time after every desktop switch.

Show the desktop name
- Never
  Disables the desktop name overlay.
- When switching
  Shows the overlay after every desktop switch for the amount of time specified below.
- Permanently
  Permanently shows the overlay.
Options
- Duration __ Seconds
  Sets the amount of time for which the desktop name overlay is visible after every desktop switch when using the "when switching" option.
- Position
  Sets the position where to display the desktop name overlay. You may specify a monitor as well.
- Always on top
  Choose whether the desktop name shall be visible on top of all windows.
- Text
  Sets the text to be shown in the overlay. In fact, the overlay is not restricted to showing the desktop name, but can contain arbitrary text. Four special variables are available that get automatically replaced with a specific value. The variables are %G for the name of the current desktop, %g for the number of the current desktop, %V, and %v for the name and the number of the previously active desktop, respectively.
- Variables
  Pops up a menu with the available variables and inserts the selected variable into the text at the cursor position.
- Font
  Sets the font (including size, formatting, and color) for the overlay.
- Colors
  Sets the colors for Font and Outline of the desktop name.
- Background
  Choose whether the overlay appears with a solid, customizable background color or with a transparent background.
- Show Dexpot Logo
  The desktop name overlay optionally show the Dexpot GbR Logo.
- Transparency
  Sets the transparency for the overlay. Can be combined with the transparent background option.

Switching Desktops: Monitors
Dexpot display all connected monitors. Blue monitors are affected by desktop switching. Monitors with a gray gradient are excluded from desktop switching. At least one monitor must be enabled.

Only use this setting when multiple monitors are present
Have a different setting when no supplemental monitors are connected. This option is disabled by default.

Plugins and Extras

Plugins
This is a list of all installed Dexpot plugins, i.e. ".exe" files located in the "plugins" subfolder of the main Dexpot program folder. The checkbox to the left of a plugin's name indicates whether the plugin is running and can be clicked in order to start the plugin, or shut it down in case it's already active. When you select a plugin from the list, its name, the author's name (linking to the author's website), and a short description of the plugin are displayed on the right. Click the "Configure" button to change the settings of a running plugin. The button may be disabled if the plugin doesn't offer any further options. Some plugins, e.g. Dexcube, have customizable hotkeys that are included in the "Hotkeys" section of the settings when the plugin is running.
Behavior of windows on other desktops
Sets the action to be taken when a window belonging to a desktop other than the current one gets activated.

Passwords
- Change master password
  Sets the Dexpot master password. This password is related to the desktop passwords which can be set up in "Configure Desktops". The master password is required to change a desktop password or, when desktop password protection is enabled, to perform various operation not specific to one protected desktop, e.g. exiting Dexpot.
- Reset passwords
  Clears all Dexpot passwords, including the master password.
Debugging
The options in this section are meant to be enabled only on request by our support team, in order to diagnose a particular problem.
- Enable log file
  Has Dexpot log all internal errors it encounters and various other status messages to a file.

  Opens the folder containing the log file and selects it.

  - Disable full-screen preview
    Disables the creation of desktop screenshots. Besides the full-screen preview, other components, like the DexTab desktop switcher and the plugins Dexcube and SevenDex, will be affected as well. If you don't use any of these features, you may enable the option to conserve memory.
  - Don't keep taskbar button order
    The job of the taskbar reordering feature is to keep the order of taskbar buttons constant across desktop switches. When this option is enabled (i.e. taskbar reordering is disabled, i.e. the checkbox is checked), the order of taskbar buttons will always reflect the order in which the windows are placed on top of each other, and hence buttons may switch positions.
  - Disable window recovery
    Disables the persistent storage of window distribution data used by Dexpot to restore windows after a crash.
  - Keep Foreground Lock Timeout
    Leaves the Foreground Lock Timeout untouched on Dexpot start.
  - Leave tokenized windows enabled
    Prevents Dexpot from disabling off-screen windows on other desktops.
